Cottage Garden
Cottage gardens are believed to have originated in medieval England as peasants planted small gardens around their houses. The gardens were utilitarian in nature and provided families with vegetables, herbs and fruits. Flowers were less prevalent, and many gardens included pig sties, chicken coops and beehives. By Elizabethan times, the country become more prosperous and the gardens evolved aesthetically, incorporating more ornamental plants and flowers into the design.
Our Cottage Garden’s signature feature is a white gazebo. Planted in the mid-1990s, various shrubs and herbaceous perennials create an intimate setting under the shifting shade of nearby Asian tulip poplar, water hickory, dawn redwood, sawtooth oak and Chinese pistachio trees.
