Growing and Eating Bamboo Shoots

Backyard Skills for the Southern Gardener series

Saturday, April 6th, 2024 from 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Frank Williams Classroom at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens

$10 per person, Registration Required

This session will give participants an understanding of growing bamboo in South Georgia. We will start with a brief history of bamboo in Georgia. From there, we will explain the difference between clumping and spreading varieties of bamboo, choosing where to plant bamboo, and caring for the plants (and your neighbors). We will talk about ways to use bamboo for crafts and indoor décor. And, because it is spring and many varieties of bamboo are shooting, we will talk about identifying and harvesting bamboo shoots, and preparing them for eating. Included will be a cooking demonstration.

Presented by Kay Koppedrayer, Daphne Lewis, and Jaap Koppedrayer of the Southeast Chapter of the American Bamboo Society.
